Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1 How does Online Crime Reporting help me?
Answer 1 This service is an alternative way for you to report non-emergency crimes day and night without having to visit or call a detachment. The report you are submitting is reviewed and entered into the RCMP Records Management System by your local detachment. Your report is vital in assisting the RCMP with identifying crime trends in the community and deterring future crimes. An incident number will be included in a generated report that is emailed to you upon submission.
Question 2 Do I need to be the victim of the crime to report it online?
Answer 2 Yes, because this helps us reduce duplication of files. If you are unsure if you are the victim or have any other inquiries, please call 1-800-440-1323 or email .
Question 3 Why can’t I report my incident type?
Answer 3

Online Crime Reporting is actively under development and does not currently support all incident types. We are continuously making improvements and adding incident types to the system.

Currently, you can report the following incident types:

  • Damage/Mischief Under $5000 to Property
  • Damage/Mischief Under $5000 to Vehicle
  • Theft of Bicycle Under $5000
  • Theft Under $5000
  • Theft Under $5000 from Vehicle
  • Lost Property
  • Hit and Run to Unoccupied Vehicle or Property
  • Lost or Stolen Licence Plates or Decals (Registration Tags)
Question 4 Is there a way to track/check the status of my report once it has been submitted?
Answer 4 No. Currently, it is not possible to check the status of your report. The incident is reviewed by your local RCMP detachment and a police officer will follow up if more information is required.
Question 5 What do I do if I want to follow up with my report?
Answer 5 Call 1-800-440-1323 or email and provide the reference number given to you when you submitted your online crime report.
Question 6 How can I edit my online crime report?
Answer 6 To update your report, please call your local RCMP detachment and reference your incident number.
Question 7 How fast will my online crime report be processed?
Answer 7 An incident number will be included in a generated report that is emailed to you upon submission. The incident is reviewed by your local RCMP detachment according to their operational capacity. However, there will be no follow up unless more information is required.
Question 8 Are online crime reports taken as seriously as reports taken over the phone or in person?
Answer 8 Yes. Although the types of crime that can be reported online are less critical than some, we take all reports of crime seriously. Online crime reports will be investigated the same as a crime reported in any other way. Reporting crime helps the police identify where they are needed and guides future patrols.
Question 9 I don't have a crime to report but I have a general inquiry. Where do I go?
Answer 9 Please contact your local detachment. Your local detachment’s contact information can be found here: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/detach/en.
Question 10 Is the online crime reporting tool a 24-hour service?
